Sleeping Tips for the Summer Season

Record temperatures, hot winds, inability to step outdoors, summer is finally here, and believe it or not, impacts our sleep.

Climate change makes the seasonal changes more intense and demanding on our body, making sleeping, resting or doing anything a challenging task.

Also, extreme heat turns every physical activity into a challenge. Therefore, our health should always be a priority.

Our body needs a cooler temperature while sleeping, and the climate during summer is cruel with the heat makes it difficult to sleep.

If you are also finding it difficult to sleep peacefully, these tips can help you sleep comfortably.

Maintain a sleep schedule.

Be it any season, the body needs a fixed sleep schedule, and while we might like to sleep during the day with an AC on till the heat subsides, it can impact your sleep schedule and body clock.

Human bodies need consistent and non-disruptive sleep, and our metabolism works efficiently and even regulates the body's energy expenditure if you have a good sleeping schedule.

A fixed sleep schedule helps adjust your body clock to work and develop the best temperature for sleeping.

Our body absorbs heat and converts it into a sweat to lower the temperature, and without a fixed sleep schedule, your metabolism wouldn't function properly.

Air ventilation

Though your body would enjoy a cooler or temperature neutral sleeping environment, air ventilation is essential during the summer season.

Bear in mind that there should always be proper ventilation for air to exhale, especially when multiple people sleep in the same room.

Ventilation eliminates any potential smells in your room and reduces the humidity making the room feel colder.

Tip: A closed mesh door, meshed windows or other air inlets that allow proper air regulation are beneficial.

Sleepwear and bed accessories

Loose, thin, and lightweight summer clothes are vital for your body to feel relaxed in summer.

These tips apply to the bed accessories and any clothing or pillow you use to sleep.

You can feel light and calm with thin cotton clothing, and it also helps your body cool by allowing more room for movement and ease of sweating.

Avoid the tight clothing and undergarments which makes you feel suffocated.

The same rule applies to the sheets and comforter you use in your bed. The lighter the sheet, the more comfortable it is for your sleep.

Also, loose sheets allow your body to move, sweat and feel at ease without feeling suffocating to your body.

Invest in the right mattress and pillow.

How comfortable you feel during sleep depends on your bed, as mattresses made from thick foams absorb and trap body heat, causing you to feel warm.

Mattresses like latex and open coil systems that circulate the air through the interior make you sleep cool.

Tip: Pillows made from material such as latex ventilated foam that does not trap the heat can also be helpful to sleep.

Don't exercise close to bedtime.

Working out during the day can be very helpful to sleep as it disburses energy and makes you feel more tired in the evening. However, your body temperature can spike up if you exercise close to bedtime. Thus, one may find it difficult to fall asleep at your convenient bedtime.

Stay hydrated

Beating the heat isn't always a battle of temperature. Consistent sweating can always cause dehydration. Drink at least 8 ounces of water to keep yourself hydrated. Dehydration can cause headaches which can make it difficult to sleep. Avoid drinking too much water before bedtime as you don't want to wake up to use the bathroom.

Sleeping in summer needs one to be calm, relaxed, and mentally and physically free of stress. How you sleep is in your hands. Summer will be sweaty, uncomfortable, and horrible in all possible ways, but the sooner you adopt these suggestions, the better you might be able to sleep.
