What Is Pillow Top and Euro Top Construction?

You may come across many alien terms while you search for the best mattress to meet your needs. Some manufacturers sew an additional layer of padding on top of the mattress. This different style of plush comfort layer is called a pillow top and euro top mattress. They are relatively soft and comfortable with approximately 1-to-4-inch thickness. The immediate goal of these extra layer padding is to provide better comfort and cushioning. The overall purpose of the pillow top and euro top is the same, but both have a distinct design.

What is a Pillow top mattress?

A Pillow top mattress is where an extra layer of padding is stitched or glued on top. The additional layer of padding sewn to the top makes these mattresses different. The top layer can contrast a firm or plush mattress feel. The pillow top is generally 2 to 4 inches thick to provide comfort.

The extra layer padding that makes up a pillow top comprises several different materials such as cotton, latex, memory foam or other fibres.

Pros of a pillow top.

Most memory foam or gel mattresses that people associate with comforts are expensive. However, pillow top with fiber options are cheaper and more affordable.

Pillow tops are helpful to relieve aches and pains. They are beneficial for side sleepers who have hip and shoulder pressure points.

The additional foam layer in the pillow top helps in reducing motion transfer. It allows a less disturbed sleep when more than one person is sharing the bed.

Cons of the pillow top.

Pillow top mattresses can be difficult to move or rotate as they are heavier than standard mattresses.

As a part of regular bed maintenance, the Pillow top mattress requires the frequent head to foot rotation. Turning it clockwise or anticlockwise ensure even longer wear and more comfort from the bed.

The potential for sagging is one of the drawbacks of the pillow top style mattresses. It may lead to backache and body pain if the sag is significant.

What is a Euro-top mattress?

Euro top mattresses are generally similar to Pillow top. However, the material used is usually dense and of higher quality. Euro tops are sewn flush with the edges of the mattress rather than on top of it, creating a uniform, neatly stacked appearance.

Euro top mattresses are the perfect combination of soft and supportive material and are excellent for those who suffer from back and neck pain. Euro top feels a bit firmer around the edges, with more cushioning towards the centre of the bed.

Pros of the Euro-top.

The extra layer of comfort sewn into the mattresses offers a neat look compared to the unsightly gap pillow top creates.

The Euro tops are usually constructed from the denser foam fiberfill, making them more durable. The Euro top supports the pressure point and gives comfort to the area you need the most because it comes flush with the sides of the mattress. Euro top mattresses keep their shape, softness and, contouring ability.

Cons of the Euro-top.

The extra layer of the mattress absorbs more body temperature, resulting in heat retention, which can be a problem for hot sleepers.

Ultimately, the choice of materials and where they are placed on the mattress is the primary difference between Pillow top and Euro top. Pillow tops are softer fluffier and create a more bowed appearance on the top. Euro tops are dense and altogether flush with the surface of the mattress.

Depending on your sleeping preference, you can pick any of these, as long as your mattress supports your spine.
