Why discard your old mattress

Mattresses are the most difficult to get rid of, along with plastic and electronics. Of course, everything has an end, so there will be a time when you will have to switch to a new mattress. However, when you decide to discard your old one, make sure to do it responsibly. Before you start looking for ways to dispose of your mattress responsibly, below are some crucial pointers on why you should discard your old mattress.

Age is not just a number for your mattress.

Generally, the age of any mattress is 8 to 10 years. However, many manufacturers suggest that a mattress life cycle depends on how we use and maintain it. A mattress is more likely to get worn out as we use it more often than any product, and if you have had one for more than eight years, it might be time to discard it and get a new one.

Sagging

Spending around 6 to 9 or more hours on your mattress daily can soften the foam materials as they have significant pressure. This continuous pressure on the foam leads to a saggy mattress which might cause back pain. Over a while, you may experience backache and body pain due to low support on your spinal cord. If your mattress sags more than 1-2 inches, then it is time to get a new one.

Allergies

People don't generally clean their mattresses regularly. And if you love to eat in bed or have pets, then your mattress might already have bacteria. Dust mites are one of the leading causes of allergies and, since your mattress is uncleaned, it may be an excellent place for allergens to thrive. If you feel that your allergies have suddenly aggravated then, your mattress might be the real culprit behind it.

Wear and tear

Over the years, the surface of your mattress may show some obvious signs of damage. Look for signs like feeling the coil of your mattress, physical damage, and mattress bigger than the bed frame that suggests that the mattress you are using needs a replacement.

Now that you know some of the reasons you should discard your mattress, try and replace the same responsibly. Here are some ways to help you do so.

Recycle

As our landfills are already full of trash, you can opt for recycling your mattress. It involves taking components and reusing them.  You can recycle springs and coils into new items or, the memory foam can be shredded and used to make carpet padding etc.

Donate

If you are replacing the mattress, however, it is still in good condition, you can donate it to someone in need. You can also donate it to a charity that can put the mattress to use.

Return or reuse

If you buy a new mattress from the same manufacturer, you can give the old one away. You can also reuse the mattress to make a bed for your pets, cushions or place it on your balcony and give it a new look.
